- Diseases:rectal cancer
- Treatment programs:Interventional therapy + seeds implantation
I’m Dato’ Ting Chiew Yew, Deputy Minister of Tourism of Sarawak, Malaysia, and a good friend of Mr. Chan Khian Yap. I would like to tell you about Mr. Chan Khian Yap’s story from the time he was diagnosed with cancer to his treatment in Guangzhou, China, until he regained his vitality.

Testimony: Minimally invasive treatment saved him from stoma difficulties
I still remember that Chan Khian Yap was only 33 years old when he got cancer. One day, he told me solemnly that he had been having blood in his stool for a long time, and it even developed into pus and blood and anal pain. I immediately persuaded him to see a doctor, and then I received the bad news that he was diagnosed with rectal cancer, and the tumor was located 3cm from the anus.
He told me that he had rejected the local doctor’s recommendation for an abdominoperineal resection with a permanent colostomy. I expressed my understanding—after all, no one would willingly carry a colostomy bag for the rest of their long life, especially since Mr. Tian is still unmarried. Therefore, I tried to help him explore other treatment options. Fortunately, Mr. Tian attended an offline cancer-sharing session hosted by St. Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou in Malaysia. After consulting and learning about previous cases during the event, Mr. Tian decided to give this hospital a try. He said, “Perhaps this place can offer me the result I’m hoping for.”
It was before Christmas 2022. He was admitted to the hospital accompanied by his family, and then he received the minimally invasive treatment plan of "interventional therapy+ seed implantation" formulated by hospital experts. During the treatment, I called him to express my condolences. On the phone, he said excitedly that his discomfort symptoms had been completely relieved, and half a year later, Chan Khian Yap's colonoscopy showed that all cancer cells in his rectum had lost their activity. I was really happy for him and congratulated him on his successful "second life"!
The future: healthcare without borders
Through Mr. Chan Khian Yap's experience, I also learned about minimally invasive treatment techniques such as interventional therapy. This technology is relatively rare in Southeast Asia, which also indirectly shows that the anti-cancer methods in Southeast Asia need to continue to learn and develop from other countries in order to provide better treatment options for cancer patients in their own country and bring more help.
Taking this opportunity, after my good friend Chan Khian Yap gradually returned to normal life, I wrote a thank you letter to St. Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou and its medical team to express my inner gratitude and expectations:
“I sincerely thank the hospital and the MDT for setting up the International Service Center in Malaysia and bringing valuable help to Malaysian cancer patients. My good friend Mr. Chan Khian Yap was able to regain his life thanks to the hospital’s excellent medical level and innovative technology. Here, I sincerely invite the hospital’s leadership and the MDT to Miri, Sarawak, Malaysia, for friendly publicity, exchanges, and cooperation, and to bring good news to more cancer patients.”
I understand that St. Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou has been supporting cancer prevention and treatment in Southeast Asia and even the world for many years, and has also received recognition and affirmation from health departments of other countries such as Malaysia. Therefore, I will also share some of the videos recorded by Mr. Chan Khian Yap during his treatment at St. Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou as reference materials for cancer patients in Sarawak in the future, to help them provide them with new options when seeking new treatment methods.
Gratitude: Minimally Invasive Treatment Brings Miracles to Life
After being rescued from a difficult situation, Mr. Chan Khian Yap wanted to bring hope to more people, just like him.
Chan Khian Yap told me that he firmly believed that "saving a life is better than building a seven-story pagoda", so he enthusiastically recommended this minimally invasive technology to many of his relatives and friends, including the uncle of another good friend of his.
I learned from Chan Khian Yap that the gentleman was already in his 80s but had bladder cancer. Like him before, he was faced with the dilemma of stoma removal, which was undoubtedly painful and torturous for an old man over 50 years old. So, Chan Khian Yap introduced and suggested the old man based on his own experience. After learning about it, the old man immediately chose this hospital.
Recently, I got good news from Chan Khian Yap: A few weeks ago, the old man had a biopsy, and the results showed that there were no cancer cells at all! After minimally invasive treatment at St. Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou, the old man's condition is in complete remission!
Seeing such an encouraging situation, I’m really happy for Chan Khian Yap, and even more happy for those cancer patients. I think that in the future more cancer patients in distress will be saved and revitalized!
Finally, I would like to share a quote from Mr. Tian to encourage all cancer patients: “Never give up, and hope will always be there!”
