Blood Streak in Saliva, Actually a Symptom of Nasopharyngeal Cancer

It all started with a small amount of blood streak in saliva in May, 2014. How Peng Kooi went to see a local doctor and was told he was ok since it was just a slight injury in his throat. It never came crossed his mind that it might be cancer. However, this symptom wasn’t relieved but aggravated. His wife had a gut feeling that something was wrong and advised him to see ENT (ear, nose, and throat department) doctor. Through CT scan and biopsy, it was a malignant tumor in his nasopharynx. As an optimistic person, How Peng Hooi didn’t fear the diagnosis. He said, “When I know it was nasopharyngeal cancer, I wasn’t afraid. For me, cancer is not a serious disease, because everyone has cancer cells in body. Attitude is the key to face with cancer, so I accepted it positively. ”

Condition Deteriorated as He Persisted in His Way

Malaysian doctor advised How Peng Kooi to take traditional chemotherapy, but he refused. He said, “In Malaysia, the hospital only has ordinary chemotherapy which can kill normal cells and bring a lot of side effects.” Subsequently, recommended by his friend, he heard of a medicine that could boost immunity to kill cancer without any side effects. All of his families strongly opposed him to take that medicine since it was not backed up by any scientific evidence and was not tested. They persuaded him to take western medicine instead. However, How Peng Kooi persisted on his own view, so his families had no other way to change his mind but to obey his choice.

How Peng Kooi kept taking the medicine for a year which brought him undesirable effects, It deteriorated his condition more that he became thinner each day and got 2 bumps in both side of his neck, growing gradually and with discharging pus and had experiences of difficulty in speaking and eating.

New Option Came

It was so much suffering for How Peng Kooi and his families as the condition worsened until a new hope came abruptly. In Oct. 2016 his wife’s sister searched out the Facebook of St. Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital where it showed several cancer patients’ cases and minimally invasive treatment effect. At that time, the hospital held anticancer symposium in Malaysia, so she registered and attended. After it, she strongly recommended How Peng Kooi to have a try on minimally invasive treatment. As stubborn as before, it wasn’t so convincing to him and finally through his sister in law’s strong persuasion and for his love for his wife that he began to change his view. Professional MDT Customized Suitable Treatment Programme

In Oct. 13, 2016, How Peng Kooi in wheelchairs arrived at St. Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou with his wife. At that time, he was in advanced stage and only weighted 39kg. With nearly 1.7 meters tall, he was skinny and fragile. His nasopharynx tumor had grown to 6*4cm; the left cervical tumor was 7*8cm and the right was 13*9cm. He couldn’t walk, speak clearly and eat normally.

Dr. Liang Feilv and Dr. Hu Xiliu assessed How Peng Kooi who has severe malnutrition, which is also called cachexia state. It is a sign that advanced cancer patient become extremely emaciated and wore away gradually. Emaciation is one of the remarkable features among cancer patients. According to statistics, about half of cancer patients are afflicted by cachexia, and the 10% to 25% died of it. There are 2 reasons that cause cachexia. On the one side, tumor becomes over-grown and metastasizes to other parts of organs, which will consume a lot of nutrition. On the other side, in advanced stage, some of cancer patients will lose appetite or be unable to eat, making them deficient in nutrition. In addition, cachexia reduces muscles and their activity, meanwhile destroy patient’s immune system, so cancer cells are so easy to spread and proliferate.
