On the road to fight cancer: from fear to hope

I am Kornel Purba, 41 years old, a government official from Medan, Indonesia. In February 2017, I found a palm-sized lump on the right side of my neck, and I began to feel uneasy. This fear intensified in April 2017, when a CT scan showed lumps in the right neck and nasopharynx, and I was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal carcinoma stage III. It was a frustrating blow.

To seek better treatment effects, I tried Chinese medicine treatment but did not undergo anti-tumor treatment for cancer. A year later, the lump grew rapidly, and the pain spread to my head. I often suffered from insomnia and could only fall asleep after taking painkillers. I was in great pain and despair at the time and even wanted to give up my life. When I learned about St. Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou through the Internet, a glimmer of hope ignited my life.

Minimally invasive treatment: the dawn of rebirth

In August 2018, I participated in an offline anti-cancer consultation charity sharing session through Medan International Service Center of St. Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou. The many successful cases of minimally invasive cancer treatment deeply touched me and gave me hope to live. With the help of Medan International Service Center, my wife and I successfully came to Guangzhou, China.

After my admission, I underwent a detailed examination and was diagnosed with stage IV nasopharyngeal carcinoma, which had metastasized to multiple sites, including both sides of my neck and my lungs. The mass on the right side of my neck measured 9 cm, while the mass on the left side was approximately 4 cm. Due to the tumor's dangerous location, treatment presents certain challenges. The MDT collaborated to develop a personalized treatment plan for me, with interventional therapy at its core.

On September 19, 2018, the results of the post-treatment examination showed that the tumor had shrunk significantly. The pain in my body also gradually decreased, and I finally didn't need painkillers to maintain my life! This also made me full of confidence in the next treatment. After several comprehensive minimally invasive treatments, the tumor on my neck is no longer palpable. The MDT told me that according to the latest examination results, all the tumors on my body have "disappeared". After unremitting persistence, I finally won! I am grateful and very grateful to the MDT for their efficient and accurate diagnosis and treatment. It is this minimally invasive treatment that accurately locates the lesion and directly delivers the drug to the inside of the tumor, effectively controlling the development of the tumor. This advanced treatment method allowed me to get rid of the pain in a short period and also gave me hope for life again. I can finally continue to be a good husband and father and protect my family.

The power of family: determination & courage

In my anti-cancer journey, the support of my family is my biggest motivation. My wife has been by my side for every treatment and has never been absent. She is my most solid support and gives me the courage to defeat the disease with her endless love.

Of my three children, the youngest was only two years old at the time, and the oldest was only six years old. Although they were still young, they said to me in their childish voices: "Come on, Dad!" Those words of encouragement deeply touched me and made me determined to live, not only for myself but also for them.

When I wanted to give up in pain several times, I told myself: "I can't let my children lose their father, and I can't let my wife lose her husband." To watch my children grow up, I must insist on living. I want to be their role model and use my anti-cancer experience to tell them that no matter how difficult life is, as long as you are determined and brave, you will find a solution.

In December 2023, I was invited to attend a cancer seminar held by Medan International Service Center. This time, as a "cancer survivor", I shared my anti-cancer story. On stage, I thought of myself five years ago - the patient with despair and pain, but now I can share the power of hope with more cancer patients. I am also very grateful to Medan International Service Center, especially Ms. Xu Ruying, who has been helping, encouraging, and visiting me since 2018. She is now like my family.

Meet St. Stamford Again: Delivering Hope, Faith and Strength in the Fight against Cancer

On November 22, 2024, I was invited to participate in the 2024 Southeast Asian Anti-Cancer Stars Return to Base Activity. This time, it was Ms. Xu Ruying from Medan International Service Center who brought me back to St. Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou. In the true sense, my family took me home. And I seemed to have stepped into the door of rebirth again, and gratitude surged in my heart. The professional diagnosis and treatment of the MDT, the careful care of the nurses, and the support of the translators and Medan International Service Center made me full of confidence and peace of mind during the treatment.

Today, I want to tell all my friends who are fighting cancer not to be afraid of the threat of the disease. Timely diagnosis and active treatment are the first steps to defeat cancer, and maintaining an optimistic attitude is the key to a cure.
