Dede, from Indonesia, is a stage IVA patient with throat cancer. Since 2017, he has experienced many years of ineffective treatment, and his condition has gradually worsened and even lost his voice for a while. In May 2024, he came to Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou for minimally invasive treatment. After 7 months of integrated minimally invasive treatment, the tumor was almost completely inactivated and his sound was regained.

Dede (December 2024)

A long journey to seek medical treatment

In 2017, Dede's life was disrupted by sudden hoarseness and voice loss. At first, he didn’t pay much attention to these symptoms, assuming they were just ordinary throat discomfort. However, as time passed, his hoarse voice gradually worsened, and this change left him uneasy. Eventually, he went to a local hospital for an examination. Doctors discovered a lump in his throat and recommended medication as treatment. Yet, a year of continuous drug therapy brought no improvement—instead, his hoarseness grew even worse.

In October 2019, Dede returned to the hospital for further examination. A laryngoscopy revealed a space-occupying lesion on his left vocal cord, and a pathological biopsy confirmed it as papillary carcinoma. Doctors recommended treatment for the vocal cord, but Dede, fearing that surgery might cause permanent voice loss, opted for medication instead.Over time, however, his condition progressively worsened. He developed breathing difficulties, frequent fevers, and became so physically weakened that he could no longer walk normally.

In April 2024, Dede's condition deteriorated further, prompting doctors to perform a tracheotomy to alleviate his breathing difficulties. Subsequent pathological biopsy revealed that his right vocal cord had developed into well-differentiated keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma. Imaging showed an irregular, heterogeneous solid laryngeal mass with ill-defined borders—measuring approximately 2.2cm×4.9cm—extending across the supraglottic, glottic, and subglottic regions, accompanied by airway stenosis. Six years since the initial symptoms appeared, the disease had progressed to stage III laryngeal cancer. While doctors recommended vocal cord resection, Dede adamantly refused. He could not accept living the rest of his life without the ability to speak.

Minimally Invasive Treatment Brings New Hope

After years of ineffective treatment, Dede refused to give up hope. He understood all too well that losing his voice meant losing his connection to the world. Determined to explore every possibility, he began scouring the internet for treatment options. Through a friend's recommendation, he discovered the minimally invasive cancer treatment technologies at Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou. With 20 years of specialized experience in minimally invasive oncology, the hospital offered a glimmer of hope. Through remote consultation with their international service center in Jakarta, Dede learned about a revolutionary treatment approach—one that could potentially preserve his vocal cords while avoiding surgical resection. This breakthrough rekindled his hope, and he made the pivotal decision to travel to Guangzhou for treatment.

On May 30, 2024, Dede arrived at Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou. At this time, he was physically weak, experiencing breathing difficulties, and had completely lost his voice. After admission, the hospital promptly arranged comprehensive examinations for him. PET-CT results showed a ring-shaped soft tissue mass in his bilateral vocal cord area, measuring approximately 2.9×2.4×3.6 cm. The lesion involved both the bilateral cricoid cartilage and thyroid cartilage, with multiple enlarged lymph nodes in the left supraclavicular and bilateral neck regions, the largest being about 1.3×1.0 cm.

Miracle of minimally invasive treatment: tumor shrinks by 90%, he regains sound

After the second interventional treatment, Dede's condition began to show significant improvement. His breathing difficulties eased, phlegm production decreased, and he gradually regained his ability to vocalize. Follow-up examinations revealed a 1.2 cm reduction in the vocal cord tumor size. By the third interventional therapy session, Dede's physical recovery progressed remarkably - so much so that he and his wife successfully climbed Baiyun Mountain together, marking a triumphant milestone in his rehabilitation journey.

The latest PET-CT results showed Dede's tumor had shrunk by 90% compared to its size at admission, with only minimal residue remaining. Dede said that although he experienced mild nausea and fever during treatment, these side effects were completely acceptable compared to traditional treatment methods.

The destined encounter: Minimally invasive treatment rewrites his fate

After seven months of treatment, Dede regained his ability to speak clearly from complete voice loss, with his quality of life significantly improved. "Coming to Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou was the best decision I ever made," he said gratefully. The hospital provided comprehensive services for patients, from airport transfers to medical billing.

Dede specifically mentioned that the hospital's examination efficiency was extremely high, with test reports available within one day - compared to the one-week waiting period back in Indonesia. He noted how doctors and nurses placed great importance on patients' treatment experience, promptly addressing his feedback after each procedure and providing him with family-like care.

Dede confessed that when first diagnosed with cancer, he and his wife had been overwhelmed by fear and helplessness. They had consulted hospitals in Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand, but found no solution. Now, having regained a new lease on life at Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou, he believes this was God's arrangement - a destined connection with this medical institution.

Face it bravely and there will be hope

In early 2025, as his condition recovered, Dede gradually breathed normally, and the trachea he had previously incised had been sewn again. On February 13, he returned to Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou for a follow-up visit and could speak normally.

Dede sincerely thanks all the medical staff of Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou for their professional treatment and caring services to regain his rebirth. He hopes that through his story, more patients can understand the potential of minimally invasive treatment. He encourages patients to face cancer bravely and actively find suitable treatments. He believes that in the future, more patients like him will regain their health and happiness through minimally invasive treatment.
